Search is changing faster than ever.
For many years, the process was simple: we searched on Google, looked through the results, clicked a website, and found the information we needed.
Today, things are different.
People are increasingly using Google Search, Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT Search, YouTube, social media, and other AI-powered platforms to discover information.
For digital marketers, this change is important.
Google Search: Still the Foundation
Google Search continues to play a major role in digital marketing.
SEO fundamentals such as:
- Search intent
- Quality content
- Technical SEO
- Website structure
- Internal linking
- Page experience
- Authority and trust
are still important.
However, the way people search is changing.
Instead of searching only for:
“Digital Marketing Consultant”
people may ask:
“How can I use digital marketing to grow my small business?”
This means marketers need to focus not only on keywords, but also on customer questions and search intent.
What Are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews provide AI-generated summaries directly within Google Search for certain queries.
Instead of visiting multiple websites to understand a topic, users may get an AI-generated overview along with links to relevant sources.
This creates a new consideration for marketers.
The question is no longer only:
“How can I rank my website on Google?”
It is also:
“How can I create content that is useful and trustworthy enough to be surfaced in AI-powered search experiences?”
What Is ChatGPT Search?
ChatGPT Search offers a more conversational way to discover information.
For example, a user might ask:
“How can I improve SEO for my small business?”
Then continue with:
“What about local SEO?”
And then:
“Can you give me a simple content plan?”
The search journey becomes a conversation rather than a single keyword search.
This makes context, useful information, and clear answers increasingly important.
What Should Marketers Do in 2026?
I believe marketers should focus on three key areas.
1. Don’t Abandon SEO
Traditional SEO is still important.
Technical SEO, quality content, search intent, website structure, and user experience continue to provide the foundation.
2. Answer Real Customer Questions
Find out what your customers are actually asking.
Then create useful content that answers those questions clearly and practically.
3. Add Human Experience
AI can create generic content very quickly.
What makes your content different is your:
- Experience
- Insights
- Case studies
- Examples
- Opinions
- Industry knowledge
Human experience is becoming more valuable, not less.
SEO, AEO and GEO
You may have heard about SEO, AEO and GEO.
In simple terms:
SEO → Improve visibility in search engines.
AEO → Create content that clearly answers questions.
GEO → Improve visibility in generative AI search experiences.
These should not necessarily be treated as completely separate strategies.
A strong digital marketing strategy can bring them together.
Google Search vs AI Overviews vs ChatGPT Search
| Feature | Traditional Google Search | Google AI Overviews | ChatGPT Search |
| Main experience | Search results | AI-generated summary + links | Conversational answer + sources |
| User behaviour | Query → Results → Click | Query → Summary → Explore | Question → Answer → Follow-up |
| Keyword importance | High | Still relevant | More conversational |
| Search intent | Important | Very important | Extremely important |
| Content visibility | Rankings | Citations / links within AI experience | Sources / mentions within responses |
| Follow-up questions | Separate searches or interactions | Increasingly conversational | Built into the conversation |
| SEO | Fundamental | Still important | Website accessibility and quality matter |
| Content focus | Relevance + quality | Helpful, original content | Useful, reliable, relevant information |
The biggest difference is the user experience.
Traditional search asks:
“Which webpage should I visit?”
AI-powered search increasingly asks:
“What answer am I looking for?”
That distinction matters to marketers.
My Perspective
I don’t see the future of search as simply Google vs ChatGPT.
People will use different platforms for different purposes.
Someone may use Google to find a local business.
They may use ChatGPT to compare options.
They may use YouTube to learn something.
They may use social media to discover recommendations.
The real goal for businesses should therefore be:
Be visible wherever your customers are searching for information.
Final Thoughts
Search is changing.
AI is changing search.
But one thing remains the same:
People want useful information from sources they can trust.
So, in 2026, digital marketers shouldn’t focus only on chasing the latest AI tool or trend.
Instead, focus on understanding your audience, answering their questions, creating valuable content, and building a trustworthy brand across multiple digital channels.
SEO is evolving. Search is evolving. But the value of genuinely useful content remains.
